Do You Want to Become a Workplace Liaison Officer for the Workers of England Union?

The Workers of England Union believes strongly in independent Trade Union representation.

Unlike the traditional workplace representative model, our Representatives are independent of the employer and are not part of the same workplace management structure as the member they are representing. We believe this provides an important level of independence when a member needs advice, support or representation.

But independent representation does not mean that there should not be a strong Trade Union presence within the workplace.

This is where the Workplace Liaison Officer has an important role.

A Link Between the Workplace and the Workers of England Union

A Workplace Liaison Officer provides a direct link between Workers of England Union members, the Trade Union office and our independent Representatives.

They are someone members can approach in their workplace when they have an immediate question, concern or simply need to know how to contact the Trade Union office.

The Workplace Liaison Officer does not replace the independent Representative or undertake formal representation. Instead, they help members access the right support quickly.

If somebody approaches them with a workplace problem, the Workplace Liaison Officer can contact the Trade Union office, seek guidance and make sure the member knows where to go for further advice. Where necessary, the matter can then be passed to an experienced independent Representative.

This gives members the best of both worlds: someone they know within their workplace combined with independent representation when they need it.

Understanding What Is Happening in the Workplace

Workplaces are different.

Individual employers have their own policies, procedures, management structures and working practices, but employment law is overriding and policies can sometimes be outdated or contain illegal clauses. This is where having a representative who is independent from your employer is very important. Problems can sometimes develop that affect several members or a particular department, occupation or group of workers.

A Workplace Liaison Officer can help the WE Rep understand what is happening on the ground.

They can feed information back to Representatives and the Trade Union office, identify developing workplace concerns and help ensure that members' voices are being heard.

Likewise, information from the Union can be passed back to members through the Workplace Liaison Officer.

This two-way communication becomes increasingly important as the Workers of England Union continues to grow.

Helping the Workers of England Union to Grow

Workplace Liaison Officers can also play an important role in introducing colleagues to the Workers of England Union.

They can explain how the Trade Union operates, promote membership and show colleagues how they can access independent Trade Union advice and representation.

They therefore become an important part of the structure and future development of the WEU.

Workplace Liaison Officers are not simply individuals who hand out information. They are part of the Workers of England Union structure, working alongside our Representatives and officials and helping us build a stronger presence in workplaces across England.

Stephen Morris, General Secretary of the Workers of England Union, said:

“Our Workplace Liaison Officers are extremely important to the way our Trade Union operates. They provide that vital link between members in the workplace, our independent Representatives and the Trade Union office. They help us understand what is happening on the ground, support our Representatives and ensure information can move quickly in both directions. As the Workers of England Union grows, our Workplace Liaison Officers will become an increasingly important part of that structure.”
