In February, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) announced changes to modernise the licensing system and streamline processes. Later in 2015, the SIA will launch a new self-service online licensing platform, improving information accessibility, speeding up applications, and enhancing industry services.

For Individuals

Individuals applying for or renewing a licence will use a new self-service website. Key features include:

  • Online personal accounts for applicants and licence holders
  • Real-time application status updates
  • Alerts when licences are granted and approaching expiry
  • The ability for licence holders to amend personal details directly online
  • An online appeal process
  • All licence renewals conducted online
  • Compatibility with the latest web browsers
  • Paper applications accepted only in exceptional circumstances

First-time applicants must verify ID documents at a participating Post Office.

Employers applying on behalf of staff will follow a distinct process, depending on their Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) membership. See our guide to SIA licence renewal for detailed steps.

For All Organisations

Organisations can pay licence fees on behalf of individuals via the new platform once applications are submitted. Key updates:

  • Bulk paper application services discontinued
  • More guidance for bulk users
  • Enhanced company licence checker for status verification

For ACS Companies

ACS members benefit from Licence Assist and Licence Management services.

Licence Assist

  • Companies can complete and pay for staff licence applications
  • Automated notifications upon licence approvals
  • Applicants maintain personal SIA accounts and verify ID at the Post Office

Licence Management

  • All Licence Assist benefits
  • Companies can conduct and endorse identity checks without Post Office visits
  • Ability to update employee details on their behalf
  • Requires ACS companies to meet criteria and sign a legal agreement

A pilot Licence Management trial is scheduled for 2015, with wider rollout in 2016. Visit our Licence Management Service page for updates.
