“Students in England Deserve Fairness, Not Higher Fees”
The Workers of England Union (WEU) has condemned the Government’s plan to raise university tuition fees in England every year in line with inflation from 2026, calling it another blow to fairness and opportunity.
Tuition fees in England already stand at £9,535 a year, the highest in the UK. Under the new system, this will rise annually and likely push fees close to £10,000 a year. Maintenance loans will also rise with inflation, but this will do little to ease the growing debt burden faced by students across England.
Meanwhile, students in Scotland pay no tuition fees, Welsh students receive greater support, and Northern Irish students pay less. Once again, students in England are being treated unfairly.
The Government claims the rise will improve quality, yet offers no evidence. In reality, it simply transfers the cost of Higher Education onto students and families across England, deepening inequality and deterring working-class young people from higher education.

Stephen Morris, General Secretary of the Workers of England Union, said:
“It is disgraceful that students in England are once again singled out to carry the financial burden of a broken system. Tuition fees have become a tax on the ambition of students in England. The WEU will continue to campaign for a fair, fully funded higher education system that gives every young person equal opportunity.”
