Campaign Focus: Establishing a St George’s Day and the 12th July for Bank Holidays. To celebrate England’s history and promote community unity.
The Workers of England Deserve Better
Workers in England have fewer bank holidays than many European countries, despite long working hours and increasing pressures on work-life balance.
Making the case for additional public holidays is both reasonable and necessary.
Establishing St George’s Day as a bank holiday would offer a national celebration of England’s achievements, culture, and values, much like other UK nations enjoy their own patron saint days. This would offer a much-needed civic moment for pride and reflection, much like St Andrew’s and St Patrick’s Days do in Scotland and Ireland.
The 12th of July, marking the historic unification of England under one crown in 927 AD, would serve as a powerful symbol of national unity and shared heritage. That year and date is historically significant because it marks the approximate unification of various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms under King Athelstan, who is often regarded as the first king of a unified England.
