Protecting the rights of pregnant women at work is more important than ever, as the situation is deteriorating due to increasing workplace pressures, economic uncertainty, and inadequate legal enforcement.

Pregnant workers face unique health risks and need accommodations to ensure their safety and well-being, yet many are encountering discrimination, unfair treatment, or even job loss. Without strong protections, pregnant women are vulnerable to exploitation and stress that can harm both their health and that of their unborn child.

Ensuring these rights not only safeguards maternal and child health but also promotes equality, economic security, and dignity in the workplace. These are fundamental pillars, that must be upheld to prevent widening social inequalities and protect future generations.

Recent data underscores the urgency of this issue. According to a report by Pregnant Then Screwed, up to 74,000 women in the UK lose their jobs each year due to pregnancy or maternity leave, marking a 37% increase from 2016.

Additionally, a study by Culture Shift revealed that 12% of women have experienced maternity discrimination at work, with more than 1 in 5 knowing someone who has.

These statistics highlight a troubling trend of declining protections for pregnant workers, emphasising the need for stronger safeguards and enforcement to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunities for all employees
