A report commissioned by financial protection specialist Unum has revealed what the future workplace could look like, and the inevitable role technology will play.

A Balancing Act

Technology means we work faster, which in turn raises expectations on people juggling an increasing number of responsibilities. Employees, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks generated by this efficiency, will benefit from future systems that are both advanced and intuitive.

Examples include minimalist layouts across email and social media platforms, clearer typography, and enlarged imagery. More intelligent work systems will leverage employee data to deliver a bespoke experience tailored to individual needs and working habits. Companies could use these insights to craft a working environment, job description, and benefits package that best meet each person’s requirements.

Going Tech-Free

Introducing “tech-free timeouts” is something businesses of all sizes can implement. This might involve creating dedicated spaces in the office for technology-free meetings or arranging off-site technology-free away days. Our report shows that zoned areas for relaxation, meditation, and even naps could become mainstream, allowing staff essential time for contemplation.

Technology itself can help ensure workers switch off. Future configurations might block emails outside working hours or limit device usage to protect wellbeing and promote a healthy work-life balance.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Managing stress levels and safeguarding mental health begins with prevention. Unum provides stress awareness workshops and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to address a range of issues that may impact performance and wellbeing. Such support is often bundled with group income protection products, ensuring employees and line managers receive immediate help when challenges arise.

Employers must act now to adapt to this evolving workplace. By embracing these opportunities, HR professionals can enhance communication, foster creativity, and boost performance across the organisation. Investing in the future workplace benefits everyone—attracting and retaining talent, improving productivity, and positioning companies for long-term success.
